California’s Traffic Amnesty Program Ends March 31st

California’s Traffic Amnesty Program was signed into law on June 24, 2015 and was designed to help people with outstanding fines and restricted driving privileges.

People with fines due before January 2013 are eligible for a 50-80% deduction of outstanding fines. Those whose driving privileges were restricted may be able to get their driver’s license reinstated.

In March of 2016 the Department of Motor Vehicles reported that 612,000 people had suspended driver’s licenses for failure to appear or pay fines and an estimated 8 million people were eligible for fine reduction amnesty.

As of March 10, 2017, almost 200,000 driver’s licenses have been reinstated, more than 200,000 fines were reduced. Through the amnesty program the state has collected $35 million in gross revenue.

The amnesty program will end on March 31, 2017.
